Subject: 3 Hot Standards Just Released!

Visit the NISO Ballot Calendar (http://www.niso.org/ballot.html) to link to the following draft standards:

*A new Draft Standard: Z39.86-200x. File Specification for the Digital Talking Book.
This is the first draft of this proposed standard prepared by NISO Standards Committee AQ chaired by Michael Moodie (Library of Congress, National Library Service for the Blind
and Physically Handicapped).  For details on the committee's work go to: http://www.niso.org/commitaq.html
The draft Standard describes the file specs for the next generation of talking book.  The text of the proposed standard (approximately 130 pages) is presented as a pdf file and in html so it can be easily accessed by persons with visual limitations.
Comment period closes:  March 20, 2001

*Data Dictionary for Technical Metadata for Digital Still Images
If you have a photo collection this standard will be of special interest:
The metadata in this new Data Dictionary describes the technical aspects of the image including details on the capture process. This information is important to collection management, and in particular, assessing what steps need to be taken to assure the longevity of an image collection.  Over the long term, using a consistent metadata vocabulary will encourage the development of applications to manage and migrate image collections opening these resources to many more students and researchers. This draft is being developed by NISO Standards Committee AU co-chaired by Oya Y. Rieger (Cornell University Libraries) and Robin Dale (RLG, Inc.). The committee intends to release the data dictionary as a Draft Standard for Trial Use later this year. Your input is needed now at this early development phase. For details on Committee AU's work go to: http://www.niso.org/commitau.html
Comment period closes: April 16, 2001
