Software configuration: Keeping statistics

Most packages keep a log of all accesses, e.g. (from WebSTAR):

Scripts are available for most server software for routine summaries of this information, normally on a weekly or monthly basis.

Issues:

• choice/installation of statistics software
• scheduling regular log processing
• how much information to make publicly available?
