There are other implementations of TeX for Mac OS X: iMacTeX, CMacTeX, OzTeX, and Scientific Assistant. If you are thinking of installing TeX, you should visit their sites as well. A good way to get started is to read the site "Mac OS X Implementations of TeX" maintained by Gary Gray and Joseph C. Slater, http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex, which has pointers to all of these TeX implementations. This site also explains how to join the "TeX on Mac OS X Mailing List."
