Obanazawa, or "Pampas Vale"

At Obanazawa we visited a man called Seifu. Although he was a rich man, he did not have a coarse manner or vulgar mind. He often went to Kyoto and he knew what it was like to travel. So he insisted that we stay with him for several days to rest from our long journey, and he showed us all manner of hospitality.

What a cool, summer breeze!
Here, I make myself t home,
Rest, and take my ease.

Come into the air!
Crawl from 'neath thy silkworm shed,
Dear toad, croaking there.

A lady's eyebrow brush
Came into my mind when I saw
Safflowers in bloom.

How ancient the attire -
Unchanged for centuries -
That silkworm keepers wear!
