- Jikaku
- This temple is said to have been founded by Jikaku Daishi in 860 on
orders from the Emperor Seiwa after Jikaku had completed his studies
in China and returned to Japan.
- Heard
- The hard, ancient, forbidding quality of this is a sort of biography of
Jikaku. Basho is not put off by this nor is he disappointed that the
temple is closed - he hears the counterpoint, the trilling of the cicada.
Away from the fier of nature while crossing the mountains and from the
relief of Obanazawa, he has now achieved a kind of tranquility.
