Basho and his Narrow Road to the Deep North

From The Narrow Road to the Interior
trans. by Helen Craig McCullough.

Staiton 7 - Kurobane

We called on Joboji, the warden at Kurobane. Surprised and delighted to see us, he kept us in conversation day and night; and his younger brother, Tosui, came morning and evening. We went with Tosui to his own house and were also invited to the homes of various other relatives. So the time passed.

One day, we strolled into the outskirts of the town for a brief visit to the site of the old dog shoots, then pressed through the Nasu bamboo fields to Lady Tamamo's tumulus, and went on to pay our respects at Hachiman Shrine.* Someone told me that when Yoichi shot down the fan target, it was to this very shrine that he prayed, "and especially Shohachiman, the tutelary deity of my province." The thought of the divine response evoked deep emotion. We returned to Tosui's house as darkness fell.

There was a mountain-cult temple, Komyoji, in the vicinity. We visited it by invitation and worshipped at the Ascetic's Hall.*
