Research Interests and Background

My research interests in contemporary political theory include the politics and law of necessity, Giorgio Agamben, Hannah Arendt, the politics of homelessness and public space, and the role of the state in constituting identities.

I received my B.A. at Yale University and my Ph.D in Political Science at the University of Washington.

Publications include Citizens Without Shelter: Homelessness, Democracy, and Political Exclusion from Cornell University Press (2004), "Juding Necessity: Democracy and Extra-legalism," Political Theory (2008), "Terminal Exceptions: Law and Sovereignty at the Airport Threshold," Law, Culture and the Humanities (2007), and "Redistribution, Recognition and the State: The Irreducibly Political Dimension of Injustice," Political Theory (2002).
