Tip Sheet For Tutors

Return to Tip Sheet Index

  • Know your limits - don't promise your time, supplies, or self if you can't follow through.

  • Plan ahead - talk with co-workers about lesson plans, activities, events, ideas... so they can be actualized with greater ease.

  • Be yourself - building trust with children is best done in genuine openness - if you want their attention, give them yours. … Be creative - if you can't afford to buy books or materials for a project, try using recyclables or photocopying texts.

  • Network, network, network - the members of the class, community, schools, libraries, etc. all have ideas on how to approach problems and celebrate triumphs - use each other to learn from and help out.

  • Remember, you are making a difference - whether you are a tutor for one child or a teacher's aid, you are helping to make learning easier. We are all teachers, by example - so, don't get discouraged.

  • Enjoy - children remind us of great diversity and fascinating stories about the way life is - delight in their views and smiles.
