1. Be consistent: The children need and appreciate stability. Come on a regular basis.
2. Be flexible and spontaneous. There is no set schedule. Children arrive at all hours. Plan a couple of-lessons, but be prepared: it may not get used.
3. Observe the children play. I was able to plan lessons and activities by observing the children through their play activities.
4. Introduce yourself everyday you visit. The children see too many people. They do not always remember your name.
5. Start with a small number of credit hours first. It is important to evaluate your schedule beforehand. If you would like to add more later you can. Do not over commit yourself. The children count on you. Give what you realistically can.
6. If you have a problem, talk to your supervisor and instructor.
7. Have fun! Volunteering is fun and rewarding. Remember you are needed, even if you feel unappreciated. The children appreciate your presence.
