Tip sheet for tutoring at Skipworth Detention Center

First, there is some general information that might help potential tutors who are thinking of working at Skipworth. It is one of the safest places to tutor. I know that what I said is hard to believe, but it is true. Skipworth has detention staff supervising at all times. Although the kids at the facility have committed crimes, they are still just kids. Be prepared to become involved in your students life. I say this because, not only are you their tutor and mentor, but somebody they consider a friend.

Things to know;

1. Skipworth is extremely hectic, be prepared to go with the flow.

2. There are going to be times that a student will not be accessible for various reasons.

3. There are times when Skipworth can be intimidating.

4. Never be afraid to ask staff members for help.

5. The times in which tutors can be at the facility are very limited. The only times are 2:15 P.M. - 4:45 P.M. Monday through Friday. It varies with each child.

6. A tutor working at Skipworth MUST be assertive.

7. Be prepared to use anger management skills.

8. Know that the child that you are working with is there voluntarily.

9. Always have two different lesson plans for a day, there are times the kids will refuse to do one of them.

10. There is a book on the premises that has all of the lesson plans previous tutors (us) have developed and used.
