Two more generations have been born since I first visited Prehistoric Gardens. I continued the family tradition, visiting the exhibit with my two children and now I have accompanied my grandson there as well. (Thomas poses dutifully with my favorite creature, the Triceratops). I found it gratifying that, although the newest generation has been exposed to the realism of computer graphics, they still enjoy racing along the park's trails, "making wishes" each time they cross the footbridges that span the stream meandering through the forested site, and calling out the names of the creatures they recognize. In fact, I think my grandson, Thomas, enjoyed Prehistoric Gardens more than the real fossil exhibits of The Field Museum in Chicago.

While researching details for this web page I came across a real estate ad for the park. Sadly, I noticed it emphasized the beauty of the forest and spectacular ocean beaches nearby rather than the attraction. Perhaps Prehistoric Gardens is doomed to extinction after all like so many vintage roadside attractions.from my childhood.

Another travel page referred to the site as tacky, obviously looking at the attraction with the eyes of an "urban sophisticate". I suppose they prefer the land to be preserved as part of a wealthy recluse's estate, locked away from the "abuse" of young families. But, until it fades into history, like the animals it includes, the exhibit can be toured for an admission fee of $6 for adults and $4 for children over three. It is open daily 9 a.m.. to dusk.

Other items of interest to dinosaur enthusiasts may include dinosaur hunting games for the PC like "Carnivores", "Carnivores 2", and "Ice Age" from Wizard Works. These games do include the potential for the player to be attacked and eaten by one of the predator species that populate the game so I recommend them only for children 8 years and older.
