Loren Kajikawa

kajikawa@uoregon.edu

Loren Kajikawa received his Ph.D. and master's degree in musicology from UCLA, and a bachelor's degree with honors in ethnic studies from UC-Berkeley. He has previous teaching experience at UC-Berkeley, Loyola Marymount, and UCLA. Through teaching and research, Kajikawa examines the role of race and identity in the production and reception of music. His current research on hip hop, rhythm and blues, jazz, and rock builds connections between popular music at the end of the twentieth century and the political contexts of the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton years.

Paper presentations include those for Experience Music Project, Society for American Music, American Musicological Society, International Association for the Study of Popular Music, and Society for Ethnomusicology, among several others. He is a referee for ECHO, a music-centered journal, and has articles in journals (published and forthcoming) and two articles in books under review.
