Course Overview
This course is designed to develop understanding of the teaching
and learning process using the Orff Schulwerk approach to music
and movement. The daily schedule includes focus
on rhythm, melody, Orff instruments, movement, recorder playing,
improvisation, musicianship, Orff theory, orchestration, and pedagogy/special
topics sessions.

Levels
Level I
Anyone with music training wishing to acquire basic knowledge and
pedagogic foundation in the Orff Schulwerk approach may enroll.
To receive a Level I certificate, participants must attend all
sessions and successfully complete all assignments.

Instructors
Jim Solomon – Level I, Basic & Pedagogy
Jim Solomon is an author, national clinician, and National Board
Certified Teacher. He teaches at R. B. Hunt Elementary in St. Augustine,
FL, where he works with general music classes, Chorus, Recorder
Club, and D.R.U.M. Jim is a former St. Johns County “Teacher
of the Year.” He has taught Level I Orff for over 20 years
and just taught a Master Class in Rhythmic Training at the National
Orff Conference.
Peggy McDonnell - Movement & Recorder
Peggy McDonnell has been teaching classroom music rooted in the principles of Orff Schulwerk for 37 years. She is a graduate from the University of Maryland, and she holds a masters degree from Portland State University. Currently, Peggy teaches at the Catlin Gabel School, an independent school in Portland, Oregon. Before coming to Catlin Gabel, she taught in the Baltimore County and Portland Public Schools. Peggy received her Level III Orff Certification from both Denver University and Mills College. In addition, she has done graduate work at UCLA and the University of Portland. Along with other Portland teachers, Peggy helped to establish the Portland Orff Schulwerk Association and served as President from 1976-1978. She recently retired from the POSA board where she served as the PSU liaison. Peggy has taught many workshops throughout the Pacific Northwest, and her students performed at the 1997 AOSA National Conference. Peggy is especially interested in exposing children to music and dance from world cultures and in making the music of the Schulwerk come alive for children.

Comfortable clothes and shoes appropriate for movement are recommended.
Materials will be available for on-site purchase through
West Music Company.

or Orff instruments at the end of the workshop at a reduced rate,

Tuition and Fees
Tuition
Non-Credit: $650
Graduate Credit: 01-06 Hours, $50 per credit hour
(in addition to the $650 workshop fee).
By June 22, the UO Continuation Center form must be completed and all graduate fees paid.

You may cancel your conference registration on or before June 1 for a full refund minus $50 processing. After June 1, there will be no refunds.

Lodging/Meals
Lodging
All necessary information may be found at: http://housing.uoregon.edu/summerhousing/. Arrangements for residence hall lodging must be made through University Housing.
Meals
As the housing URL indicates, the residence halls offer flexible meal plans. In addition, several fast food and moderate-priced restaurants are within walking distance of the School of Music.
