OPP Attendance and Participation Policies

Outdoor Pursuits Program courses are very popular, and most fill early. To maximize your chances of obtaining a spot if the course is full on DuckWeb keep trying to enroll, as spaces will be created when people drop the course online, AND (most importantly) come to the first class meeting!

The following protocols govern enrollment and attendance in our courses:

  • First class attendance is mandatory for all of our courses. NO EXCEPTIONS! Most OPP courses meet only once per week, so it's imperative that you be at the first class session to receive important information about course content, logistics and safety practices.
  • If you miss the first class, you will not be allowed to participate in the course. You will be replaced by someone in attendance who is trying to enroll. Should you miss the first class, it is YOUR responsibility to drop the course on DuckWeb. The instructor cannot do this for you.
  • There is a very good possibility that you'll be able to participate in a course if it is shown as "full" on DuckWeb. Many enrolled students do not attend the first class session, making spaces available. Go to the first class session! If there is one open spot, but three people in competition for it, the course instructor will determine, using an equitable strategy, who gets the spot.
  • Wilderness Survival is a "prerequisite" to participation for many courses, meaning that successful completion of Wilderness Survival is required BEFORE participation in these courses is permitted by the instructor. You will not be blocked from enrolling in any of our courses on DuckWeb (unless a specific registration block is in effect), but you WILL be blocked from participating further at the first class session if you have not taken Wilderness Survival. Please note that you WILL NOT be able to talk the course instructor into waiving the Wilderness Survival prerequisite.
  • Many OPP courses are "combination" courses consisting of a "preparation course" and one or more "outing courses". The preparation course is the "corequisite" (i.e. taken at the same time) for the the outing course(s).
  • For example, Snowcamping Preparation is the corequisite for Snowcamping 1 Outing, Avalanche Safety Preparation for Avalanche Safety Outing. Backpacking Preparation is required for participation in ALL of our backpacking outings including Backpacking 1, 2, 3, Ultralight Backpacking, and Backcountry Survival Techniques. You need to enroll in Backpacking Preparation only once, even if you participate in more than one of the backpacking outings.
  • Note: First class attendance in the preparation course is required for any outing course, even if you've ALREADY taken the preparation course in a previous term.
  • Participation in an outing course is not possible without taking (in the same term), or having taken (in a previous term) the corequisite preparation course.
  • You MUST register separately for both the preparation course and the corresponding outing course. If you enroll in only the preparation course, but not the corequisite outing course, the outing may fill to capacity with other participants, leaving you without a spot in the outing.
  • On-campus meeting information is not listed for outing courses. Refer to the corequisite preparation course for information on meeting times and location.

If you want to enroll in the course as a non-credit student, you must do so at the first class session. Earlier enrollments are not possible. The course instructor will determine, at that time, if space is available.
