Michael Strong From: Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada Title: Program Director and Senior Instructor Responsibilities: Michael directs the operations of the Outdoor Pursuits Program, trains outdoor leaders and teaches a variety of outdoor pursuits courses. Michael's main teaching focus is on the gateway course, Wilderness Survival, and professional development courses (Adventure Education and Environmental Education). Michael also teaches mountaineering, ski touring, ice climbing and avalanche safety. Jim Blanchard
From: Portland, Oregon Title: Senior Instructor (semi-retired) Responsibilities: Jim teaches backpacking, ultralight backpacking, snowcamping, backcountry survival, backcountry photography, mountain rescue techniques, and the Principles of Outdoor Leadership course. Background: Jim initiated the Outdoor Pursuits and Outdoor Leadership Training Programs in 1979 and served as a director of the program until his partial retirement in June, 2003. Jim teaches courses during fall, winter and spring terms, and assists with program administration. Daniel Crowe From: Minneapolis Minnesota Title: Rock Wall Manager/Instructor Responsibilities: Dan manages the indoor climbing wall in the Student Recreation center and teaches Rock Climbing 1, 2, and 3, High Angle Rescue and Introduction to Lead Climbing. Background: Dan has been involved in the climbing industry since the early 1990's, starting in the retail side of the industry before migrating to the competitive side of the sport. He set routes for the ASCF and coached a successful climbing team competing at a national level. In the mid 1990's he began his career as a profesioanl guide in Eastern Oregon. Mike South From: Albany, Oregon Title: Adjunct Instructor Responsibilities: Mike teaches climbing courses at our indoor climbing wall. Background: Mike’s interest in the outdoors began when he was a young person growing up amongst the big trees of the Western Oregon Slope. His love for technical climbing was sparked in 1996 after taking a Rock Climbing I course while attending the U of O. Climbing drove Mike to many adventures throughout the Western U.S. before settling back in Eugene in 2000. Since then, Mike has been working closely with the latest in climbing hardware design and technology while managing the growth of a local outdoor store Backcountrygear.com. Jennifer Strong From: Medford, Oregon Title: Adjunct Instructor Responsibilities: Jennifer teaches Adventure Education in fall term. Background: Jennifer is an academic coach In Academic Learning Services at the U of, and owner of Strong Leadership, LLC. A professional facilitator since 1991, Jen specializes in experiential training techniques, helping groups and their members build relationships and improve their communication, leadership and problem solving skills while having fun learning together. Prior to starting her own company, Jen built and managed the Spencer Butte Challenge Course in Eugene, Oregon. In addition to team building and skills training, she consults with organizations on challenge course development, management and staff training. Don Ladigin From: San Francisco, CA Title: Volunteer Adjunct Instructor Responsibilities: Don co-teaches the Ultralight Backpacking course with Jim Blanchard in spring term. Background: As a child Don started backpacking with his parents in the Yosemite valley, and never stopped hiking. He has hiked extensively in the USA and Europe and has led outings for the Sierra Club and Obsidians, as well as being involved with the OPP since its beginning. Anne Borland From: originally from Philadelphia, PA (converted Oregonian since 1986) Title: Adjunct Instructor Responsibilities: Anne teaches Rock Climbing 1. Background: Anne works as a graphic designer, experiential educator and outdoor instructor and holds degrees in telecommunications and film, and graphic design. She contracts as an outdoor instructor, ropes course facilitator and freelance artist.
