IMPORTANT NOTES FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED IN HIGH ANGLE RESCUE OR MOUNTAIN RESCUE OUTING COURSES: Attendance at the first Preparation Course session during the first week of classes is REQUIRED. Students not in attendance at the first Preparation course session will be required to drop the course. Check the online schedule to determine when and where the specific Preparation course meets. PEOL 266 - High Angle Rescue Preparation WINTER TERM This course introduces vertical rescue techniques for a lone rescuer. Topics include care and use of equipment, knots, belay escapes, passing a knot, counterbalance descents and raises, raising rescues utilizing mechanical advantage and other improvised rescue techniques. Rescue techniques are practiced in a "ground-school" setting in our indoor rescue training facility prior to practice in the vertical environment (during the outing). |

PEOL 366 - High Angle Rescue Outing WINTER TERM This course covers vertical rescue techniques for a lone rescuer, in the context of a two-day, on campus outing. The outing provides hands on application of the rescue techniques practiced in the preparation class, specifically: counterbalance descents and raises, raises utilizing mechanical advantage and rappelling with a victim. The first day is spent practicing on the bolt ladders in our indoor training facility, and the next day is spent at our indoor climbing wall. |

PEOL 290 - Mountain Rescue Preparation FALL TERM This course is designed to prepare participants for the three-day Mountain Rescue Techniques outing. The course includes knots (which must be learned and demonstrated prior to participation in the outing course), search types and strategies, planning and control, self rescue and extrication on rock with application to ice and crevasse rescue, improvised transportation systems, and utilization of SAR resources. |

PEOL 364 -Mountain Rescue Outing FALL TERM This course is designed to provide hands-on practice in basic mountain rescue techniques for both rock and snow climbing. The course self rescue and extrication on rock, crevasse rescue techniques, improvised transportation systems, and a variety of other skills as time, weather and site conditions allow. The course consists of a three-day outing to Smith Rock State Park. |

PEOL 361- River Rescue Techniques SPRING TERM This is a survival course designed for hikers, hunters, skiers, snowshoers, snowmobilers, and others who venture into backcountry areas during the cooler months of the year. The course will also be of value to climbers, since winter-like conditions may be encountered at higher elevations at any time of the year. The course provides the knowledge, skills and practice that are essential to survival in the cool, wet, windy climate of the Pacific Northwest. |
