THE HISTORICAL PROFESSION #2:
JUDGMENTS

Journal Reviews Due in Class

In this session, we're going to take short break from the specific topics of nationalism and transnationalism to focus on the standards of judgment historians apply to their work. The assigned readings consist of an article submitted to the Journal of American History, and reviewer's reports from each of the scholars the journal editor asked to evaluate the piece. As you read them, ask yourself what standards of judgment each reviewer uses to praise or criticize the article. If you were the reviewer, would you have recommended publishing this piece?

Reading Assignment:

David Thelen et al, "What We See and Can’t See in the Past: A Round Table." Journal of American History 83 (March 1997): 1217-1272. (Electronic Journal).

Suggestions for Further Reading:

Beth Luey, Handbook for Academic Authors. Cambridge University Press, 1990.

An excellent guide to publishing, which includes chapters on choosing journals and book publishers, turning dissertations into books, and working with editors as well as detailed information about publishing mechanics and contracts.
