Introduction to Historical Thinking in a Global Context

The Honors College history sequence introduces students to the study of history over a three quarter period in the freshman or sophmore year. At the foundation of this course is the question: What does it mean to understand a topic from an historical perspective? The problems of how to read and interpret historical evidence, how to write historical analysis, and how to conduct historical research are explored throughout the sequence.

Seminar Workshop Descriptions

Each course in this sequence is taught on a seminar workshop format. While following a general chronological framework -- HC 231: pre-1500, HC 232: 1500-1800, and HC 233: 1800-2000 -- each instructor works from his or her expertise to introduce students to the study of history and specific historical problems or topics. Students in one section may explore the issues of state-building primarily through examination of historical materials from western Europe while others will look at the same topic from the perspective of statecraft in China.
