Name of course: America Since 1950 Department and course
number: HIST 476/576 Instructor: Ellen Herman CRN: Meeting times: Prerequisite: none Description of Course: This is a course that covers a variety of
topics in recent U.S. history, but last spring, I decided to
add a bit of gay/lesbian history to the mix. Two of the
books I assigned (Rita Mae Brown's Rubyfruit Jungle and Jeff
Escoffier's American Homo) were on gay/lesbian topics and I
also showed part of "Before Stonewall," a film about gay
life prior to 1969. Most of the students really seemed
engaged with this material, so I'm going to repeat it again
this winter quarter. Along with the explicit focus on gay
history since 1950, the course will cover standard topics
(almost all of which can also be considered through the lens
of gay history) including McCarthyism and the Cold War, the
civil rights revolution, the Great Society, Vietnam, Nixon
and Watergate, and the rise of the New Right, among
others. Name of course: Rethinking the American 1960s Department and course
number: HIST 407/507 Instructor: Ellen Herman CRN: Meeting times: Prerequisite: none Description of Course: This will be a discussion-oriented
research-intensive course on the 1960s, broadly defined.
There will a some collective reading, but students will be
expected to pursue significant research projects of their
own. I expect the class will cover the lesbian/gay history
of this period and would be delighted to have students in
the class with research interests in this field. Name of course: Gay and Lesbian Legal Issues Department and course
number: Instructor: Dom Vetri CRN: Meeting times: W 7:00pm - 9:30pm Prerequisite: Description of Course: I'll be offering my Gay and Lesbian Legal
Issues seminar in the Spring semester again which runs from
Jan thru April. We will be meeting wed evenings from
7-9:30. I'd be willing to allow 1-3 students audit the
class if they are interested and see me first. Perhaps they
could find a friendly teacher in an undergrad dept who would
work out a credit arrangement.
