Lesbian and Gay Law Student Association

Introduction:

Our group is an active and vital part of the law school's community. LGLSA leaders are committed to increasing the law school community's awareness of sexual orientation legal issues. This is accomplished, in part, by our leaders taking an active role in the Leadership Council. This Council, whose constituency is made up of representatives of the law school associations and the leaders of the Student Body Association, works proactively to increase cultural, societal, and political awareness of issues affecting us as a legal and social community. In working together we are facilitating a stronger, more cohesive environment--accepting of diversity and focused on prosocial change.

Generally:

LGLSA serves as an informational and support group and provides both on-campus and off-campus social events, which include informal potlucks and opportunities to meet and talk with local lesbian and gay attorneys. Past events have included: sponsering a forum on gay and lesbian families, child custody and sexual orientation discrimination; inviting prominent lesbian and gay speakers to campus; and implementing a scholarship program for any student with an interest in sexual orientation legal issues. The LGLSA is also an educational resource for the law school, the university, and the city of Eugene.

LGLSA goals:

(1) to sponsor speakers on gay and lesbian issues; (2) to increase outreach efforts to gay and lesbian students; (3) to provide support to gay and lesbian students; and (4) to serve as an information source on sexual orientation legal issues for all students and the community.

Role in the Law School Community:

The University of Oregon School of Law prides itself on its proactive, progressive, and accepting atmosphere. It actively strives to eliminate injustice involving discrimination based on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, age, and disability. This emphasis is clearly articulated in its policy which prohibits any entity that advocates or promotes discriminatory ideas, from using the premises. The faculty, staff, and students at the University of Oregon School of Law facilitate this safe atmosphere by working together to maintain a respectful and diverse environment. LGLSA, as a group composed of gays, lesbians and many allies, is successful as a result of this support and acceptance. Groups such as LGLSA, the Jewish Law Student Association, Minorities Law Student Association, and the Women's Law Forum are only a few of the groups representing our student body as a whole. We appreciate that the constituency of these groups is the diversity at the University of Oregon School of Law.
