Online Course Evaluations

Fall 2007 Pilot Term

At the end of the Fall 2007 term, the University of Oregon implemented an online course evaluation system purchased from CollegeNet, Inc., to replace the Scantron evaluation forms formerly in use.

The system was launched as a pilot for Fall 2007 and included all regular undergraduate and graduate courses in Math, Political Science, and Business (individualized study courses were excluded). A total of 373 courses taught by 191 faculty were included in this pilot group.

Students were told about this pilot in their classes and via e-mail prior to the evaluation period, which ran from Saturday, Nov 24 through Sunday midnight, December 2 (the day before final exams began).

Winter 2008 Campus-wide Implementation

At the end of Winter 2008 term, all courses will be evaluated using the online system. The system will open to students at midnight on Friday, March 7, 2008 and close at midnight on Sunday, March 16. Students will be notified via e-mail when the system is available.

Students will log into the course evaluation system through DuckWeb, then will pass securely through to the CollegeNet servers, where their evaluation data will be gathered and maintained per all faculty legislation. Anonymity is guaranteed and access to the results tightly controlled through security permissions per faculty legislation.

During the evaluation period, students who have not completed or who have not opted out of each of their evaluations will be sent e-mail reminders, asking that they log in and finish their evaluations. The evaluation system will be turned off on Sunday, March 16.

Grades will be collected and rolled to Academic History per the usual schedule: twice a day, 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. beginning with the Monday, March 17, 4:30 p.m. roll. Only students who have either answered or opted out of their evaluations will be able to see their grades as they come in during the grading period. Students who have not participated will be able to see their grades beginning March 28.

Winter grades are due at noon on Monday, March 24 (note that the traditional deadline for Winter term grades is Monday, not Tuesday noon).

After grades are processed and the grading system closes, the online course evaluation system will be opened up to faculty for viewing the results. Faculty will be told when the system is available via e-mail. Again, faculty will log into the system through DuckWeb, then pass securely through to the CollegeNet servers to view their evaluations. Students will also be able to view summarized results of the quantitative questions at that time.
