A central question in evolutionary biology is to understand the origin and generation of biodiversity. What mechanisms underlie the tremendous taxonomic diversity of extinct and present-day organisms, and how do we explain the great diversity of forms observed in most lineages? After some work focusing on the patterns of taxonomic diversity among fish parasites and on the patterns of coevolutionary interactions between hosts and parasites, my research is now driven by the need to understand patterns of molecular evolution and the processes that contribute to the origin and maintenance of diversity.
