Rav Simcha Weissman (see above, 5th from right), was a student at the Mir Yeshiva from 1935 to 1939. Click to read an in-depth article about his life, his Mir experiences and his escape in one of the last ships to leave Europe for the United States. Added December 2010

Birnbaum

Rabbi Shmuel Berenbaum (2nd from the right above) was born in Poland around 1920. He was a student of the Mir Yeshiva in the 1930s. He and many other Mir Yeshiva students left Mir, Poland and then Lithuania at the beginning of WWII. They travelled across the Soviet Union and found refuge in Shanghai for five and a half years. Rabbi Berenbaum went to the United States some time after the end of the war.

After the death of his father-in-law Rabbi Avraham Kalmanowitz in 1964, he became a rosh yeshiva at Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn, N.Y. He held that position for more than 50 years, until his death January 6, 2008.

The Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn (located at 1791-95 Ocean Parkway) has 1,200 students and the Jerusalem branch has about 4,000 students.
