The current information for obtaining a license file for SAS the 2006-07 academic year will be found at http://www.uoregon.edu/~robinh/012load.html Until further notice, the following information is still relevant. Section 1.2: Installation and License Renewal of SAS Version 8.2 and Version 9.1.3 on a Personal Computer (PC) University of Oregon faculty, staff, and students who want to perform statistical analyses or who need to manage small to large data files may install the most recently released version of SAS software (9.1.3) on their personal computers. This installation includes loading SAS on laptops and personal computers located off-campus. PLEASE NOTE: It is important that each year every user of SAS register his or her copy of the program individually as instructed below so that we remain in compliance with our licensing terms with the SAS Institute which require us to keep an accurate count of the number of users we have on campus. This requirement doesn't apply to laboratory computers, but it does apply to SAS loaded on individual computers whether you are faculty, staff, or student. Through early October, 2004, Version 8.2 of SAS was the primary choice; it will still run and depending on your computer (or other reasons), it may still be the program you need to install. The license file to renew version 8.2 through July, 2008 is also available (see section below for instructions). If you currently have Version 8.2 installed and don't know whether you should upgrade to 9.1.3, keep in mind that eventually version 9 (or subsequent releases) will be the standard on most systems, not only at the University of Oregon but also in industry and other educational institutions. It will likely be of great benefit for you to learn its new features. If you do not already have SAS Version 8.2 installed on your computer or if you want to upgrade to Version 9.1.3, go to the section headed by the title "New SAS Installation". The upgrade to 9.1.3 requires you to go through a completely new installation process. Note that you may have both versions 8 and 9 installed on your PC simultaneously. License Renewal for SAS, Version 8.2 If you have already installed SAS Version 8.2 on your personal computer (and do not desire to upgrade to Version 9.1.3) you will need to renew your license file if you have not done so since August 1, 2005. The grace period for you to run SAS expires on October 12, 2005. To renew your license for Version 8.2 you first need to fill out the license request form through the link you will find at: http://ssil.uoregon.edu/sas/sas_8_2.html A new setinit.sss file will then be sent to you through the email address you specify. It may come as an attachment or as part of the message. However you receive this file, enter its contents into the SAS program editor window and run it as you would any SAS program. When the program is submitted, it will update your license settings so that SAS will run on your PC until mid-July, 2006. If SAS 8.2 will not run because the grace period has expired (beginning Oct. 12th), the following link explains alternative methods to update the license settings: http://www.uoregon.edu/~robinh/0125license.txt Please note that our license agreement with the SAS Institute requires each user to register their license request individually each year. Do not apply a setinit.sss file that someone else has already requested. License Renewal for SAS, Version 9.1.3 If installed SAS Version 9.1.3 on your personal computer you need to renew your license file (if you have not done so since August 1, 2005). After October 12, 2006 SAS will not run. To renew your license for Version 9.1.3 you need to fill out the license request form through the link you will find at: http://ssil.uoregon.edu/sas/sas_9_1.html A new license file called sas91.sas will be sent to you through email. It may come as an attachment or as part of the message. However you receive this file, enter its contents into the SAS program editor window and run it as you would any SAS program. When the program is submitted, it will update your license settings so that SAS will run on your PC until mid-July, 2008. You can also renew your SAS license as explained on page 2 of this pdf file: http://support.sas.com/documentation/installcenter/windows/91/ts1m3/win_setinit.pdf Apply this method if SAS no longer runs (which will occur on Oct. 12, 2006 if you haven't already renewed your license). With either version 8.2 or 9.1.3 you can check your license information with the following command: PROC SETINIT; RUN; Results will appear in the LOG window. New SAS Installation Both SAS Version 8.2 and Version 9.1.3 are now available for checkout in the Computing Center Documents room (McKenzie Hall 175). Before you install Version 9.1.3 you should determine if your computer meets the minimum system requirements which can be found at: http://support.sas.com/documentation/installcenter/windows/91/ts1m3/basic.html The actual portion of the document covering this material is found on pages 8-9 of: http://support.sas.com/documentation/installcenter/windows/91/ts1m3/win_sreq.pdf SAS 9.1.3 cannot be installed on computers with a few specific operating systems such as Windows 98, Millenium, and XP home edition. If you have one of these, before you load Version 9 you will first need to upgrade your computer to one of the operation systems SAS supports (XP Professional or Windows 2000, among others). If you are a new SAS user, you should install Version 8.2 only if your operating system does not meet the Version 9.1.3 system requirements. To load Version 8.2 on a system with XP home edition requires the application of several hot fixes. You would first need to install all appropriate hot fixes immediately after installing 8.2 before you attempt to do anything else. To find out the specific system requirements for installation of Release 8.2 (TS2M0) of SAS go to: http://support.sas.com/admin/pc/windows/admindoc.html#R8.22M0 A new SAS installation (either version 8 or 9) onto a personal computer (PC) is a straightforward process that requires you to go through two steps. Step 1: Request the Required Installation License File Enter the requested information in the SAS software request form for the appropriate version found at http://ssil.uoregon.edu/sas/ This procedure allows us to count the number of SAS users and to send each one the necessary file for installation. This license file is actually a SAS program that contains the information SAS needs to enter the products and time frame for which the license is valid. The names of the license file you receive must match the version as indicated: Version 8.2 : setinit.sss Version 9.1.3: sas91.txt The contents of this file will either appear as an attachment in the email message or it may appear as part of the text itself. After you receive this message, you need to either download the attached file or cut and paste the contents of the message beginning with the first line to the end into a file with its appropriate name on your PC's hard disk (see description below). Whatever method you use, make sure that it remains a pure text file in the file transfer process. Among several ways to download a file attachment: * Log onto your email system (for most of Univ. of Oregon users, it is now know as @uoregon.edu) with a secure shell (ssh) connection and view the message delivered with SAS in the subject line. * To save the attachment (V to view) scroll down to the respective line for the attachment, and then press "S" to save the attached file in the root directory (it will already have its required file name). * Use an ftp connection to transfer this file to the root directory of your PCs hard disk, either by direct transfer or via another portable disk. (When you begin to load SAS you will be prompted for the location of this file; for version 8.2, SAS expects this file to have the indicated file name, so don't modify it.) Note: If the file appears in your email message you can copy and paste it into a notepad file on your PC. Be sure you copy from the first entry of the first line. For the Version 9.1.3 installation file the first line reads: [_SID_] For the setinit.sss file of version 8.2 the first line begins: PROC SETINIT RELEASE='8.2'; Be sure to copy all remaining lines to the bottom into a text editor window on your PC. When you have pasted its contents into Notepad, select File-Save-As in the upper left corner and in the lowest box choose as file type as Text Document. Choose the Save-in drive (uppermost box) as your Local Drive (usually it is specified as c:\). For Version 9.1.3, save the file name as a text file (.txt) with the file name prefix: sas91 For Version 8.2, enter the name in the File-name box exactly as shown below enclosed by double quotes (not single): "setinit.sss" If you do not enter the double quotes, Notepad will add the file extension .txt to the end of the name resulting in the file name setinit.sss.txt, which the SAS installation wizard won't recognize. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you encounter an error message when installing SAS that essentially states "the license file has expiried" or "invalid setinit.sss file" (described below in Step 2) the installation file was somehow corrupted in the file transfer process (i.e., SAS does not recognize certain characters that exist in it). If this is the case, call 346-1718 or send a note to robinh@uoregon.edu to receive a new text version of this file. Step 2: SAS Installation Disks The second step is to go to the Documents Room (McKenzie Hall 175) with your photo ID and request to checkout the set of SAS Version 9.1.3 (or V. 8.2) installation CDs. You may want to call ahead 346-4406 to make sure a set of disks is available. The installation disks may be checked out for a maximum of 24 hours. It will take from 30 to 60 mintues to install the software on your system. Approximately 700 megabytes of free disk space will be required for the installation. Process to Install SAS For Version 9.1.3, place the disk marked "SET-UP" into your PC's CD drive. At this point you should be automatically be given a menu with several options. First you should review the "User Installation Guide" found under "End User Steps". SAS needs to verify your system requirements, so run "Verify System Requirements" next. You may need to restart your computer when finished. When you are ready to install the program, click "Install SAS Software". One of the first prompts you will receive is to specify the drive and pathname of the valid license file you downloaded in Step 1. For Version 9.1.3, use the Browse option to locate the sas91.txt file you copied to the root directory on drive C. For Version 8.2 installation, if you placed this file in the root directory of your C drive you only need to enter: c:\ in the respective box during the installation process and continue. If you want to enter a different letter designation for the hard drive, or if you placed this file in a subdirectory, you will need to include the specific drive and path name where it resides. When you are finished with each disk, SAS will prompt you to enter the next disk with its appropriate label. Most installations do not require that all disks that come with the set be entered. Also, it is the second disk entered that requires the most installation time. When you are finished loading SAS, return the installation CDs to the Computing Center Documents Room within the 24-hour time limit. Now you're ready to discover some of the many powerful data analysis and management tasks SAS can do for you!
