DACSA Reading - Creating Inclusive Campus Environments

The Diversity Action Committee for Student Affairs (DACSA) is excited to embark on this division-wide reading project with all of you. As we build a more cohesive and exceptional Division of Student Affairs, our hope is to tap into the skills and experiences of our campus community and share our resources with one another.

DACSA is partnering with the Center for Diversity and Community and the Bias Response Team to offer book groups, online discussions, and offer facilitated opportunities to engage with the book during the academic year. In addition, we are considering bringing guest speakers to campus to further our efforts and provide opportunities for cross-departmental discussion and collaboration.

DACSA has provided a set of chapter guides for each chapter of the book. We hope this will allow readers to takes notes and use the guides in conversations after passing the book to another reader.

We encourage you to share the book with your staff and we have provided a recommended reading schedule for the division below. It is our desire that as many people as possible read the entire book, however, we understand that might be tricky. A guideline for minimum participation is as follows:

Fall Term  Chapter One Not By Accident: Intentionality in Diversity, Learning & Engagement

Chapter Four Student Resistance to Cross-Cultural Engagement: Annoying Distraction or Site for Transformative Learning?

Winter Term Chapter Eleven Focusing on Institutional Fabric: Assessing Campus Cultures to Enhance Cross-Cultural Engagement

Spring Term Chapter of your choice- pick one that fits your program/department

Here is a schedule of the full offerings which will be made available to all employees at the project debut at the Student Affairs breakfast on October 29. Our bi-monthly facilitated book discussion groups will go through the entire book. We are also offering weekly online forums for discussion.
