Questions to ponder for June 3 (Moore article)

1. Why does Moore hypothesize that it might be functional for women to have nonverbals signals to indicate interest in men?

2. Moore refers to contextual evidence and consequential evidence. What are these? What is the difference? And how do the studies she conducted provide these kinds of evidence?

3. What were the criteria for behaviors to be included in Moore's "catalog" of courtship behaviors?

4. Moore goes to great lengths to be objective in describing the behaviors that were observed. Is it really possible to come up with totally objective descriptions of these behaviors? Would you be able to distinguish Moore's description of kissing from a description of, say, spitting, if you were from another planet? What sources of bias might be present in Moore's observations? What assumptions has she made?

5. Why did Moore do her observations in 4 different places in the second study? Why were these 4 places selected?

6. How does the increase of solicitation behaviors over time in the bar fit with Pennebaker et al.'s study that you read about for last class?

7. Are solicitation behaviors context specific, or do they work in all settings?

8. Have you observed the behaviors Moore describes? Have you ever performed any of them or responded to any of them? Do you agree with her findings? As an ethologist, Moore has observed these behavior in a particular species' natural habitat. What experimental studies (either lab or field studies) might be interesting to conduct given her findings?
