After September 11th Symposia

Winter 2002 Program

In an efforts to facilitate education and informed discussion-from a variety of perspectives-on the events of September 11th and their aftermath, the University of Oregon Senate Ad-Hoc Committee charged with coordinating the university's response is sponsoring a series of panel presentations and discussions during Winter term 2002.

Symposia will meet Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in 100 Willamette Hall, according to the schedule below. Each week will feature presentations and discussions that draw on the particular perspectives, specializations, and expertise of University of Oregon schools, departments, and programs, as well as individual faculty engaged in teaching and research on topics that inform our understanding of the September 11th crisis and subsequent developments.

Schedule of Events (all meet in 100 Willamette at 4:00 PM)

Wednesday, January 30: Philosophy Looks at the War: Race, Gender, Ethics. Naomi Zack, Barbara Andrew, Cheyney Ryan (Department of Philosophy).

Wednesday, February 6: September 11th and the Changing Geopolitical Context. Alexander Murphy and Shaul Cohen (Department of Geography).

Wednesday, February 13: September 11th and its Aftermath in the News-Reporting on the Reporting (School of Journalism).

Wednesday, February 20: September 11th Crisis in Historical Perspective. Daniel Pope, Arif Dirlik, Matthew Dennis (Department of History).

Wednesday, February 27: The Legal World After September 11 (School of Law).

Wednesday, March 6: Women and the Nation in the Middle East and the U.S.
Diane Baxter, Anthropology; Linda Kintz, English (Concerned Faculty for Peace and Justice).

All meetings are free of charge and open to the public.


The University Senate Ad Hoc Committee serves to coordinate and faciliate informed discussion, from a variety of perspectives, on the events of September 11th and their aftermath.  The Committee does not take positions on issues of policy, politics, or ideology.  To ensure its neutrality, the Committee will provide clear identification of the specific sponsorship of campus activities by the groups that carry them out. In all cases, the content of remarks and materials relating to these issues are the responsibility of their sponsors, and do not reflect an official position of the Ad Hoc Committee or the University of Oregon.
