São Paulo was founded by the Jesuits in 1554, on a plateau 2,493 feet (760 meters) above sea level, but only 45 miles (72 km) from the coast, as a mission center ( Patio do Colegio - as the area today is called) for early settlers and the indians who inhabited the area. For a long time it remained a small town. Around 1850 it began to grow and became richer thanks to the highly productive coffee plantations in the state. Later on, the income from coffee exports and the increasing population provided capital and manpower for the foundation of an industrial base. Today it is the industrial and financial center of Brasil generating over 30% of the GNP. (Source: Brazilian Embassy, Washington, DC.)

• Aerial View of Part of Downtown The city is the commercial, financial and industrial locomotive of Brasil. It generates almost 30% of the total GNP of the country which is roughly US$850 billion (9th largest economy of the world.)
  

• The Megalopolis It is one of the world's largest cities and certainly the biggest city in South America. It is a city of immigrants and ethnic neighbourhoods where almost 18 million people live, many of them descendants of Italian, Japanese, and Lebanese migrants.
  

• Statue of the Bandeirantes These were early explorers that travelled West and North to the Amazon River. They are responsible for "establishing" Brasil's vast borders in South America. By planting the Portuguese flag far away from the Atlantic Coast the Spanish Crown had to recognize their marked territory as part of the Portuguese Empire. They were courageous, but often brutal killing thousands of the indigenous population. They searched for gold, emeralds, and other precious stones. São Paulo was their primary staging area.

• Museu de Arte de São Paulo Contains a huge collection of works from the the Rennaissance to Modern Contemporary - paintings are displayed differently than in most classical museums: they are hung from the ceiling and arranged in rows; viewer walks through an "avenue" of masterpieces displayed on either side. (Definitely worth a visit 2-3 hours.)
