Operation of the Council

The Undergraduate Council takes a broad, university-wide view of undergraduate education at the University of Oregon, reviewing overall objectives and suggesting improvements.  The Council works closely with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies to establish criteria for excellent General Education courses and to promote coherence, quality, and rigor across the curriculum.

The Undergraduate Council was created by the UO Senate:

Membership

The Undergraduate Council consists of 16 voting members (including elected faculty, chairs of curriculum and requirements committees, and  students).  In addition, there are ex officio, non-voting members.  All elected faculty members serve staggered, 3-year terms.  Students, selected through the procedure outlined below, serve 1-year terms.

Selection of Student Members:

The Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies solicits, on behalf of the ASUO, recommendations for students to serve on the Undergraduate Council. The recommended students are then contacted to determine their interest in such service, and students who wish to be considered are interviewed by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies plus a voting member of the Undergraduate Council.  The Vice Provost and Council member select students on the basis of recommendations and interviews, and forward their names to the ASUO for final confirmation.

Reporting

The Undergraduate Council reports to the University Senate.  An annual written report is submitted by the Council Chair to the Chair of the University Senate.  The Council also makes additional written or oral reports to the Senate as necessary.
