Consideration of AAA Proposal
Kate Wagle, Head of the Department of Art, Ying Tan and Craig Hickman both
associate professors in multimedia design, attended the meeting to answer
questions council members might have regarding the AAA proposal for the addition
of a 4-year BA/BS degree option in the multimedia design program.
Currently, a 5-year bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree is offered that includes
a fifth year with a yearlong, in-depth project. There are students who would
prefer a 4-year degree program that would include the coursework for the BFA,
but not the fifth year project. If the 4-year BA/BS program is approved,
all students will start out in it and then apply for the BFA program if they
wish the practical experience associated with the fifth year. The 4-year
degree would be consistent with the 4-year BA/BS art degree and would give
the art department more control over the number and quality of students who
take on the demanding and expensive (in faculty time) fifth year. The new
program will require no extra space, and enrollment will remain at 200 students
per year. The multimedia design program is new (only 2 years old) and the
Art Department has only recently recognized the need for a 4-year option.
The need is clear, however, and the art department would like to make this
change before the program becomes well established.
The council discussed the proposal and asked the following questions:
- Do the faculty members in Music, Journalism and Computer Science who collaborate
in the current multimedia programs support this modification?
- Will courses in the multimedia program be open to students in other majors?
- Is the list of courses required for the multimedia BA/BS degree accurate?
- Exactly how do the BA/BS and BFA degrees differ?
- Are new courses included in the 4-year program? If so, descriptions should
be provided.
- What elective courses are recommended?
- What is the content of the 3D courses? (ARTD 471, ARTD 472, ARTD 473)
Will these courses focus on techniques or theory?
- Are there enough continuing faculty to sustain the new program? At present,
visiting faculty appear to contribute substantially.
Deborah Baumgold will contact Kate Wagle to answer these questions.
General Education Survey
Each council member received a packet of 12 syllabi, 12 surveys, and the
Defining Characteristics of Group-Satisfying Courses. Deborah noted that
the survey has been set up so that council members can choose a “yes” or “no”
response, with an explanation needed for “no” only. To carry out the general
education survey, the council has divided into the two work groups listed
below. Each work group will review different sets of syllabi in order to
accelerate the process and keep the workload on individual council members
reasonable. The 12 syllabi distributed today were given to both work groups,
and will serve to test the groups’ congruence before undertaking the actual
review. This test may also reveal defects in the survey that can be corrected
before the real work begins. Deborah would like council members to review
the 12 syllabi and return the surveys to her by January 22.
