Introduce New Member

Proposal for Mathematics and Computer Science
(MACS) Pre-major
A proposal from the Department of Computer and
Information Science (CIS) for a pre-major in Mathematics and Computer Science
(MACS) was distributed to the council. This is not a new idea since pre-major
status for MACS effectively exists now: students are classified as Mathematics
or CIS majors before being admitted to the MACS major. CIS would like to
institute a Pre-MACS classification that is analogous to the Pre-CIS classification,
and intended to include that request in the original proposal to the Undergraduate
Council for a pre-CIS major (November 2000). The formalization of the Pre-MACS
classification will ensure that students have the flexibility to transfer
between the majors and will facilitate access to CIS courses by students
planning for the MACS degree.
The motion to adopt the proposal was passed unanimously.
Final Consideration of Guidelines for 300-level
Group-Satisfying Classes
Karen Sprague distributed a revised draft of
the Criteria for 300-level Group-Satisfying Courses to the council. The
council discussed the revisions and had the following suggestions for the
final version:
- In the last bolded paragraph, add the work
‘advanced’ before university-level intellectual engagement.
- Arrange the examples in the same order, with
respect to group, for each bullet point.
- Mark Thoma and Karen Sprague will slightly
revise several of the examples.
A motion to adopt the Criteria for 300-level
Group-satisfying Courses with some slight rewording was passed unanimously.
Plans for Completing the Review of Group-satisfying
Courses
Karen distributed a document outlining a plan
for completing the review of the group-satisfying courses. The plan includes
reviewing only the remaining 100- and 200-level courses, since the previous
review of 300-level courses has already provided insight and prompted better
delineation of the key characteristics of such courses (see previous section). There
are only 73 100- and 200-level courses remaining to review: 44 offered in
spring term, 26 in winter term, and 3 in summer session. Council members
will be divided into two groups, and each group will review a packet of approximately
12 syllabi for each of the next three council meetings. Karen distributed
the first packet, containing spring term syllabi, to council members for
review before the next meeting. Survey sheets should be completed and sent
through campus mail by February 16 to Donna Schimmer. The results of this
round will be discussed at the next meeting.
Next Meeting
Deborah Baumgold distributed a proposal for a
major in Medieval Studies. Deborah will contact Wendy Larson to invite a
representative of the Medieval Studies faculty to the meeting on February
19. Council members are asked to review the proposal for discussion at
the next meeting on February 19, from 12:00-1:30 in Johnson Hall Conference
Room.
