A fundamental part of the Workshop Biology project is continuous assessment and improvement of the course. In developing an effective assessment program, we have concentrated on comparing the experimental course with various versions of a more traditional general biology course, and on developing assessment methods which allow us to make effective, persuasive inferences about the benefits and limitations of the new course. In order to accomplish these goals, we have developed a model for course development and teaching improvement that involves close collaboration among the faculty on designing an assessment program, gathering and interpreting data, and making decisions about how to improve. Not only has this process resulted in a successful General Biology program here at the UO, as evidenced by our assessment results, and in a set of assessment methods and principles that others embarking on a similar project can use, but also in increased understanding among our faculty about the process of teaching improvement and change.
