| 21-24 March 1997 | The 1997 Annual Meeting of the National
Association for Research in Science Teaching will be held at the Hyatt Regency
in Oak Brook, IL, on March 21- 24, 1997. The theme for this year's conference is
Making a Difference: Building a Coherent Theory of Learning. This meeting, like the
association's journal, the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, focuses on fairly
specialized science education research, rather than on "how-to-do-it" type
activities, but there is still a great deal of stimulating and useful information

| 3-6 April 1997 | The Annual Convention of the National Science Teachers'
Association will be held from 3-6 April 1997, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The deadline for paper proposals has passed, but proposals are still being accepted
for the several NSTA regional conventions: October 17-19 in Phoenix, Arizona; October
31-November 2 in Atlanta, Georgia; and November 21-23 in Toronto, Canada. More information

The 1998 National Convention will be April 16-19 in Las Vegas, and the deadline for
proposal submissions is May 1, 1997.

| 2-4 May 1997 | The fourth Undergraduate Microbiology Education Conference will be held in
the Miami Beach area on May 2-4, 1997. The theme of this conference will be non-lecture
based learning, which will include lab, group projects, discussion-based learning,

| 10-14 June 1997 | The Annual Workshop/Conference of the Association
for Biology Laboratory Education will be held at The University of Calgary,
Alberta, from June 10-14, 1997. The Chair of the Host Committee is: Dr.

| 22-26 June 1997 | The Pacific Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science will
hold its annual meeting at Oregon State University from June 22-26, 1997. Education-oriented
proposals for papers and concurrent sessions are being accepted until April 10. For

will hold its 1997 annual meeting in Montreal, Canada, from August 3-7. Contact Marilynn Maury, AIBS Meeting Department, for more
information: 703-758-1212 (voice), 703-758-1222 (fax). Also watch the journal BioScience
for the Call for Proposals, which usually comes out in February. The member societies
of AIBS have their own calls for proposals in their own journals - of especial interest
may be the Botanical Society of America (see the American Journal of Botany), which
has an active teaching section.
