Program Goals

Our primary goal is to provide classroom and clinical experiences that will allow entry level athletic trainers to grow into professionals with the experience and confidence to be leaders in careers that include teaching, clinical practice or research. We have identified the following as our areas of distinctiveness:

  1. Leadership, Professionalism and Political Action in Athletic Training
  2. Active-Learning and Student-Centered Teaching and
  3. Advanced Clinical Skills.

In addition to these, our program’s strengths include experiences related to human anatomy, the female athlete, evidence based medicine, and professional writing.

Leadership, Professionalism and Political Action in Athletic Training

Our goal is to facilitate your personal growth and development, help you to understand the issues facing the profession of athletic training, and provide opportunities for you to deliver professional presentations. We hope that you will demonstrate leadership, take interest in your national association and be knowledgeable regarding current professional issues.

  • You will explore reading material related to personal and professional growth.
  • You will meet leaders from a variety of settings who will offer insight regarding professionalism and leadership.
  • You will have opportunities to mentor undergraduates interested in the profession of athletic training.
  • You will engage in discussions about the political issues impacting our profession and be challenged to take action.
  • You will deliver a professional presentation to your peers and be encouraged to attend and contribute to State, District, and National meetings.

Active-Learning and Student-Centered Teaching

Our goal is to give you a chance to explore the teaching field, develop your skills as a teacher, gain experience facilitating student learning, and become a more confident and effective teacher.

  • You will become familiar with many different teaching styles; specifically techniques that support an active, student-centered learning environment.
  • You will have opportunities to explore your own natural teaching style and learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your style.
  • You will be exposed to the necessary components of designing and coordinating a university level course, and gain experience facilitating both undergraduate and graduate level classrooms.

Advanced Clinical Skills

Our goal is to provide you with opportunities to learn and practice advanced athletic training techniques while challenging you to explain why you are making specific choices and encouraging you to become a life long learner.

  • You will be exposed to an athletic training work environment in which you are asked to utilize your entry level athletic training skills.
  • You will have opportunities to work with, learn from, or observe other professionals in the field of Sports Medicine (including athletic trainers, physical therapists, and physicians).
  • You will be exposed to athletic trainers and other clinicians with varying points of view surrounding assessment, management and treatment of athletic injuries.
  • You will have opportunities to explore advanced athletic training assessment and treatment techniques in both the classroom and clinical setting.
