MINUTES OF THE MAY 26, 1992 MEETING OF THE UNIVERSITY SENATE

ROLL: Present: Barnhard, Bolt, Boren, Brick, Carter, Clark, Ferguson, Forell, Gilland, Gwartney-Gibbs, Johnson, Kintz, Klinghammer, Lemert, Maitland-Gholson, Pickett, Plass, Pope, Sanders, Soper, Tepfer, Trombley, Wallerstein, Waters. Excused: Aitkin, Calof, Chase, Fox, Fuller, Gordon, Meyer, Squires, Steeves, Stuhr, Williamson. Absent: Bohme, Bohrer-Clancy, Brody, Carver, Chase, Johnson, Kelton, Dufek, Gall, Goldschmidt, Klos, Sprague, Wade, Weeks.

CALL TO ORDER/APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Senate President Michael Hibbard called the meeting to order at 3:37 p.m., in Room 133 Gilbert. The minutes of the May 12, 1993 meeting had not been distributed so the minutes of the May 12, and the May 26, 1993 meetings will have to be approved at the first meeting in October 1993.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Hibbard stated that this was to be his last meeting as President and the Senate would elect a new President and Vice President at this meeting. This meeting is the first of the University Senate for 1993-94. The President stated that before the new officers were elected he wanted to bring some items to the forefront for the Senators to begin thinking about as they will certainly be items of interest during the next year.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Senator Tepfer was recognized to give the report of the Nominating Committee. For President: Davison Soper, Physics For Vice President: Patricia Gwartney-Gibbs, Sociology

President Hibbard asked for nominations from the floor. None were made. The election of the President was by acclamation. Senator Soper was elected. The election for the Vice President resulted in the election of Senator Gwartney-Gibbs.

Senator Soper assumed the chair.

President Soper led a short discussion on what the Senate could do, that is what are the important things that await the Senate in 1993-94. Among the items that came up during this informal discussion were: Faculty governance is certainly going to be a big issue during the next year. The Senate should make sure that issues that are on the floor of the Senate are debated well and thoroughly. The report to the Assembly should include a good representation of the debate so the Assembly members will be fully informed on the issues.
