Information on the Graduate Council (GC)

The Graduate Council (GC) has 11 elected faculty members: 6 members from CAS (2 Humanities, 2 Social Sciences, and 2 Natural Sciences), and 6 members from the professional schools and colleges (1 from each and 1 At-Large). The Graduate Council serves as an advisory committee to the dean of the graduate school. Among the powers of the Graduate Council is the authority to establish general policies and regulations governing graduate study at the university.

ELIGIBILITY: Nominees must be from departments, schools, and colleges that grant graduate degrees, not including the School of Law. No two persons from the same CAS department may serve at the same time. The term of office is three years, June 16, 2001 - June 15, 2004.


The Committee on Committees and secretary, with help from the senate, will fill out the ballot if an insufficient number of nominees is received by the secretary. The secretary is instructed by faculty legislation to remove from nomination persons who do not qualify under the rules established by the faculty.

CAS -- 1 position open from Natural Sciences (but not from Geological Sciences)
        --  2 positions open from Social Sciences (may be from any social science department)
        --  no position is open from Humanities for this election year
Prof. schools/colleges -- 1 position open from Journalism and Communication, and 1 position open from Music
