Report of the University Library Committee: 2001-2002

The University Library Committee met formally three times, once each term. In addition, in April, we had meetings with each of the three finalists for the position of University Librarian. Minutes of the ULC's meetings are available on the web at http://libweb.uoregon.edu/ulc/dir01/index01.html, along with several of the documents the ULC discussed.

Among the major topics the ULC discussed were: budgetary issues; serials costs and the on-going crisis in scholarly publishing; a proposal to extend free borrowing privileges to Oregonians over 18 years of age; questions concerning whether to allow circulation of bound periodicals; creating a "shared collection" of periodicals with OSU; and the development of a regional library services center. Almost all of these issues are likely to require further attention from next year's ULC.

On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank Deb Carver for her thoughtful attention to the deliberations of the committee.
