Recommendations for UO Comprehensive Campaign

At its November 13 meeting the University Senate devoted considerable time to a “brainstorming” session to generate ideas for priority initiatives for the UO Comprehensive Campaign.  Below is a summary of those ideas (not ranked).

Comprehensive Campaign Process

q      Incorporate significant faculty involvement in the Campaign.  Consider innovative ways of involving faculty in conversations with potential donors, e.g. combine humanities and business faculty members on teams to ‘sell’ project ideas to donors

Built Environment

q      PLC – Do something!  (e.g. create enclosed atrium space for meeting/socializing with colleagues, a public space)

q      Build an alumni/faculty center that can be used jointly; consider locating a faculty club near the middle of campus

q      Upgrade the music and arts facilities significantly; consider designing facilities that could be used jointly with K-12 and community groups

q      When there is a tradeoff, upgrade/ refurbish existing buildings before building new ones

q      There is a need for high-quality seminar rooms across campus, e.g. for freshman seminars, etc.; also a need for more multi-use quality meeting places/ conference facilities

q      Build new high-quality dorms!

q      Develop structured parking in key locations

Teaching Support

q      Increase GTF support

q      Create more access to new technology for both faculty and staff

q      Staff need better facilities, e.g. meeting, lunch, break rooms, etc

q      Expand technology support for more classrooms across campus

q      Create an ‘adult’ college center (i.e. for continuing education), on the honors college model)

q      Create a science learning center; consider other learning centers modeled on ALS

q      Significantly expand monetary awards for excellence in teaching

Research Support

q      Increase endowed chairs significantly; Establish endowed chairs that cross disciplines

q      Make increased funding for the research centers a priority

q      For endowed chairs, construct the funding in ways that support additional faculty activity around the endowment theme

q      Move to a 24/7 Library

q      Double support for Summer Research Awards for faculty research

q      Think about ways to involve the larger Oregon community in framing research agendas of UO centers/ programs

University-Public Relations

q      Create an expanded “Road Scholar” program of state-wide public lectures/ outreach

Student Learning and Experience

q      Increase scholarships substantially

q      Emphasize needs-based as well as merit-based financial aid

q      Establish a fellowship program for International experience

q      Establish undergraduate research fellowships, including travel support

q      Establish 1-year fellowships for foreign students that include language training

q      Establish scholarships for community-based work and service

q      Attract more out-of –state students with scholarships, esp. in programs like Music

q      Develop programs to address the needs of non-traditional students, esp. older students, working parents, etc

q      Think about programs that will lay the seeds for ‘higher-donating’ alumni during the college experience

University Structure/ Infrastructure

q      Strengthen the Liberal Arts programs as a policy/Comprehensive Campaign priority

q      Develop funding sources to create more equity in Departmental resources

q      Expand campus-based day care options/facilities
