In response to some faculty concerns regarding Department of Defense funded research on the UO campus, the University Senate passed a motion (see http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~uosenate/dirsen056/US0506-2.html) to hold a senate meeting during winter term to discuss this topic. A meeting is scheduled for Wednesday March 1st from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., in room PLC 180.

Senate President Peter Keyes has invited several panelists with different perspectives to briefly address the issues before opening up the floor for broader discussion. Speakers include:

·      Jim Hutchison (professor of chemistry -- ONAMI)

·      Helen Neville (professor of psychology -- BBMI)

·      Brian Bogart (graduate student, Peace Studies)

·      Louise Westling (professor of English)

Vice President for Research Rich Linton will make a presentation on the history and current status of Department of Defense funding at the UO, and an AAUP member (to be named) will address issues of academic freedom.

The meeting is open and anyone interested in this topic is invited to attend.
