Subject: Highschool Graduation Requirements in Oregon
Fellow members of the UO Senate:
The Oregon Department of Education is asking higher ed faculty to offer
their input on graduation standards for students in the state's public high
schools. This is, obviously, of crucial import to us as members of the UO
community. I gave a brief introduction to this subject in the UO Senate
yesterday in my InterInstitutional Faculty Senate (IFS) report but alas the
press of time did not permit a more detailed discussion. So I am attaching 3
documents from Bob Turner that put things in perspective which you can share
electronically with your colleagues -- I gave you paper copies yesterday but
thought to provide the electronic copies as well to aid in this endeavor.
The IFS is making a major effort to obtain faculty input throughout the
Oregon University System. So please send your comments and suggestions to me
(gilkey@uoregon.edu) by 22 January and I will forward them on appropriately. If
you have questions, please contact Bob Turner (Bob_Turner@ous.edu) or Karen
Sprague (ksprague@molbio.uoregon.edu). This is an unique opportunity to help
shape the expectations for HS students and, hopefully, have an influence on
their preparedness for college and university. I encourage everyone to take
some time to participate in this effort.
Thanks.
