Dear Colleagues:

It is clear that there has been confusion surrounding the process by which we attempted to elect the next Senate Vice-President at our meeting on Wednesday. There is plenty of blame to go around for this confusion, perhaps most of which rests on my shoulders. However, I think in her email message below, Mary Ann Hyatt did an excellent job of clearly summing up the course of events. The only thing I would add is that both candidates agreed that they would be willing to put off the vote until the October meeting.

So I am satisfied that the plan to defer the vote accurately reflects the preference of those at the meeting, even if the process by which we got to this result very likely did not follow strict parliamentary procedures. I would also like to use this incident to inform our discussions surrounding revisions to our enabling legislation. I think the process by which we elect a Senate VP and who is eligible to vote should be revisited so that we can avoid the sort of confusion that hampered our efforts on Wednesday.

Yours, Paul van Donkelaar
