Permission cheerfully granted. Further, I like the idea of a small work group
from COC and Senate to address this opportunity to take next steps toward
committee reform.

Dave.
I solicit your permission to post this email on the web which encludes your
email as well. I am trying to run as transparant process this year as Senate
President. Let me respectfully suggest that it might be wise to form a Senate
Ad Hoc Committee to look into the matter of streamlining our Committee on
Committee procedures this year. The goal would be to:
Such a system would have to be secure and password protected to allow
appropriate access only by authorized persons (CoC, Senate President, Secretary
of the Senate, Webmaster of the Senate?). The final list, of course to be
determined after careful consideration by the Ad Hoc Committee.
I would propose to name you, Nathan, and John as the 3 members with DeAnna
as staff. I would ask you to serve as convenor and to have the committee elect
a permanent chair at its first meeting. And, of course, the committee should
free to ask me as Senate President to appoint other members as the committee
should feel needed.
I propose the committee be called the SAHOCI (Senate Ad Hoc committee On
Committee Information); Google reveals no unfortunate other meanings and other
acronyms were not pronouncable.

First,
Congratulations on your election as Vice President. I look forward to
working closely with you on your central role in guiding the Committee on
Committees. Our work together (with you in the lead) at the turn of the
century on the reconstitution of committees, advisory groups and externally
mandated
boards was very important in cleaning up and clarifying committees.
Indeed, I mentioned to Richard Lariviere at lunch last week that you had
approached that task in a way that masterfully clarified responsibilities and
"sunseted"
vestigial and dormant committees that were still on books.
Under
PeterÕs leadership this year, the Committee on Committees made a commitment
for the coming year to examine ways to streamline and make more effective the
process of soliciting committee participation. Next year, John Conery
from CIS Š with his extraordinary perspective on systems and automation
-- will be on the COC and it seems that we have a confluence of circumstances
that bodes well for meaningful transition away from the 40 year old process of
mailing out cards. DeAnna Heying, whom youÕve met but did not work
with last time you were chair, is providing outstanding staff support and we
are well-positioned to consider new ways of approaching committee assignments.
It
will be good to renew the dialogue around committee functions and effectiveness
that we began at the turn of the millennium.
Congratulations. Best Regards, Dave H.
