The following message is being sent on behalf of the Executive Leadership Team:

The Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies and the Senior Vice President and Provost announce the intent to substantively revise the UO Policy Statement: Alleged Misconduct in Research .

The policy was first approved in April of 1990, and revised and re-approved in October of 1996. The UO policy requires revision to be compliant with recent regulations promulgated by the Public Health Service (PHS) 42 CFR 93 and the National Science Foundation (NSF) 45 CFR 689. Updates in the federal regulations focus on clarifying the roles, rights, responsibilities, available protections, and confidentiality for claimants (those who bring forward an allegation of misconduct), respondents (those against whom an allegation of misconduct is made), witnesses, and faculty members who are appointed to any Committee of Inquiry or Investigation into an allegation of misconduct.

To retain federal compliance and eligibility for PHS funds, a revised, interim version of the current policy has been approved by the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies and the Senior Vice President and Provost. This draft was created in consultation with a representative of the UO Faculty Senate, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and the UO General Counsel. The amended version of the policy was approved by the Executive Leadership Team on October 5, 2009 and can be found at http://policies.uoregon.edu/AllegedMisconductResearch.pdf .

A formal revision process will be promptly undertaken by a joint faculty and administrative working group to update the permanent policy. Faculty or administrative personnel who wish to comment on or participate in the process to revise the permanent policy should contact Lynette Schenkel, Assistant Vice President, Responsible Conduct of Research ( Schenkel@uoregon.edu ).
