Subject: Provost/Faculty Personnel Committee
Peter,
In an earlier communication from you, I was lead to believe that the Provost would address the
Senate on 13 January 2010. The provisional agenda for that date does not mention the Provost.
Therefore, I wish to present the following motion at that meeting. This letter constitutes my Notice
of Motion.
THE MOTION: With respect to procedures for promotion and/or tenure, the Senate directs the Provost
as follows: At the time that candidates for promotion and/or tenure receive notice of the Provost's
decision, the Provost shall notify the Faculty Personnel Committee of actions taken with respect to
their recommendations.

Dear Frank.
I had asked the Provost to change the date and come to the February Senate
meeting and give the "state of the University" address then as presumably by
then there may well be budgetary information not available in January. I have
posted your motion http://www.uoregon.edu/~uosenate/dirsen090/US090-12.html and
also your email of transmittal
http://www.uoregon.edu/~uosenate/dirsen090/Stahl-12Dec09.html and linked them
appropriately. I have added US09/10-12 to the tentative January agenda. I shall
write to the Senate Rules Committee presently in this regard.
I shall be making a professional trip to Spain departing this forth coming
Monday and returning in January. I shall be in Santiago de Compostela for 8
days working with the group there in differential geometry and in Madrid for a
while working on a project with people at the Complutense Universidad in
mathematical linguistics. Thus email contact may be a bit spotty for a while.
All the best.

Dear Peter and Gwen
I hereby submit the motion below for action at the January Senate Meeting.
MOVED: The Provost shall deliver copies of the 2009 Tenure and
Promotion decision letters to the Chair of the 2008-09 FPC. The
2008-09 Chair of the FPC is requested to add an amendment to her
annual report to indicate whether the Provost's letters disagree
with the FPC recommendations and, if so, in what manner and in how
many cases.
Thanks for your help, and Happy Holidays'
Frank

Peter,
Thanks much.
I think separate is better. But I hope they can be taken up back-to
back.

Why not combine it with the previous motion? In any event, I'll get
