What services are provided in the health center?
- The University Health Center is a full service clinic which offers medical services from board certified physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses. In addition we offer sports medicine and physical therapy services, dental services, medical laboratory services, health promotion information, x-ray services, pharmacy services, immunizations, travel medicine services and much more.
What is the health fee?
- The health fee, which you pay as a part of your tuition and fees, gives you full access to all Health Center services. The health fee is not health insurance. It does not cover costs for medical services which you receive outside the Health Center. Are there charges to use the University Health Center? Yes. Charges vary depending on the service. For example it costs $7.00 to see a practitioner (doctor or nurse practitioner). You can either pay cash or charge your UO account.
Who is responsible for my medical costs if I am seen by a provider in the community?
- You are responsible for all charges for services received outside the Health Center. For this reason we encourage you to have health insurance coverage. The University of Oregon offers an affordable insurance policy for students who wish to purchase insurance.
What does the Pharmacy stock?
- The Pharmacy has a full range of prescription drugs. We also carry a large selection of over-the-counter products such as cold, allergy and first-aid medications. You can fill prescriptions written by one of our Health Center providers or by an outside provider.
How do I pay for items at the Pharmacy?
- You can bill your pharmacy charges to your UO account or you can pay at the Pharmacy by cash
or check. We do not accept debit or credit cards at this time.
Does your Pharmacy offer birth control?
- Yes. We have a full range of birth control options including Plan B. We participate in a federal grant which might qualify you for free birth control. Come in and ask about FPEP, Family Planning Expansion Project, to see if you qualify. In addition we have free condoms available.
Do you provide women's health care?
- Yes. All of our practitioners can provide women's health care services. We have a nurse practitioner who specializes in women's health care as well as a gynecologist who is available at the Health Center for consultations.
Do you offer dental services?
- Yes. We have licensed dentists, hygienists and assistants that provide dental checkups, x-rays, consultations for wisdom teeth problems, suture removal, TMJ consultations, cleaning, second opinions and referral services. We do not offer treatment services such as repair of dental cavities, root canals, and braces. If you require these services you are referred out to dentists in the community.
Do you provide immunizations?
- Yes. We not only provide general preventive immunizations such as measles, hepatitis A and B, tetanus and meningitis but we also provide immunizations required (such as measles and mumps) or recommended for travel abroad.
Do you provide counseling or mental health services?
- Yes. The Health Center has psychiatrists on staff. All of our practitioners are fully trained clinicians and can help you with emotional problems. We can also provide referral to the Counseling Center which is located in the same building.
Can you manage my diabetes?
- Yes. We have a diabetes treatment team as well as a certified diabetic nurse educator to assist you in managing your diabetes.
Can you manage my allergies and asthma?
- Yes. We have an allergy and asthma treatment team that can assist you.
Do you have a nutritionist at the health center?
- Yes. We have a licensed dietitian with whom you can make an appointment for issues such as healthy eating, weight loss and eating disorders. You can call her directly for an appointment at 346-2794. Charge is $7.00 for a one hour consultation.
Can family members use the health center?
- No. Only registered students can use the health center.
Is insurance coverage available at the health center?
Can Health Center charges be billed to my health insurance company?
- The Health Center bills the insurance company directly only if you are covered by the University health insurance plan. All students covered by other health insurance plans are responsible for submitting their charges to their insurance company for reimbursement. The Health Center provides you, upon request, with an itemized insurance statement which can be sent to your insurance company. Itemized statements are available from the Front Reception Desk or by calling 346-4441.
Is there an opportunity for internships in the University Health Center?
- Yes. We offer, for credit, a peer health education class each term. It is a two term commitment. The first term you learn basic health information and the second term is focused on public health. You will work with health educators and have the opportunity to work with other health center staff as well as provide important health prevention information to fellow students. How do I access the Health Center?
- Call 346-2770 to make an appointment. If you have an urgent need you can call or come to the health center. If it is not urgent we request that you call to schedule an appointment. There is a charge if you do not keep your appointment and do not call to cancel.
- We have a nurse advice line available to registered students at all times when the Health Center is closed. Call 346-2770 to reach the nurse advice line.
- Hours beginning in the fall are: M,W,Th,F 8am-5:30pm Tuesday 9am-5:30pm Weekends 10am-2pm. You may call 346-2770 after hours to reach a nurse for questions.
