• Prerequisites: Math 112 or satisfactory placement test score. I am assuming you are familiar with elementary functions, including the exponential and logarithmic functions and piecewise-defined functions, as well as trigonometric functions. There is a review of functions and models in the first chapter of your text. You should make sure you know this material. We will not cover Chapter 1 during lecture.

• Course Content: The first term of the 3-term calculus sequence is devoted to the study of differential calculus. In Stewart’s text we will cover Chapters 2 – 4. The topics include limits, continuity, derivatives, tangents, product and quotient rules, chain rule, implicit differentiation, higher order derivatives, related rates, optimization (max-min problems), the Mean Value Theorem, and curve sketching.

• Grades: Your course grade will be determined using the following weights.

  There will be a weekly homework to be administered and completed online with WebAssign; you can access the assignment from Blackboard. There will be 3 exams plus almost weekly short quizzes; see schedule below and Blackboard for dates. Make-up exams will not be given unless you have my prior consent and the circumstances are extraordinary.

• Technology: Some of the assigned exercises will call for the use of technology so it is worthwhile to spend time at the beginning of the term learning how to use your graphing calculator or computer algebra. Problems marked with the icon are meant to be solved with the aid of a graphing calculator while problem marked with the icon CAS require computer algebra software such as Maple, Mathematica, or a TI 89/92. If you want to use a graphing calculator, Texas Instruments and Hewlett Packard have copies of their manuals on the Web at the addresses below.

  Classroom Behavior:

  • Class starts promptly at 9:00 a.m. You should be in your seat and ready to begin class at this time. Class ends at 9:50 a.m. Packing up your things early is disruptive to your fellow students and to me.
  • If you enter the classroom late or need to leave early please sit near a door. Walking across the room during the lecture is disruptive to your fellow students and to me.
  • Attendance and classroom participation is a necessary part of this course. To participate you must attend class having prepared the materials for the day.
  • Please raise your hand to be recognized.
  • Please turn your cell phones off during class. If the phone rings it will be embarrassing for you and disturbing for everyone else in the class.
  • Remove your ear buds and close down your computers. I won’t tolerate web surfing or email activities during lecture.
  • Classroom discussion should be civilized and respectful to everyone and relevant to the topic we are discussing. If you miss a lecture please ask someone else in the class for lecture notes; we can’t use class time to revisit a topic that was covered in your absence.

  Academic Dishonesty: The university has detailed guidelines covering various forms of academic dishonesty including plagiarism, fabrication, cheating, and academic misconduct. You may work with fellow students on your homework assignments but I expect that what you turn in or complete online is your own work in your own words. I expect that you won’t consult anyone else’s paper on exams. I will hold you responsible for academic dishonesty if you don’t follow my and university guidelines.
