Inspired by their DJ professor, students in the first-year interest group Hip Hop and the Politics of Race started the UO Hip Hop Jam and Critical Art Show. The free, annual event combines music, dance, and visual art, giving students a stage to perform, present, and celebrate hip hop culture.
You don’t need to travel to hear music from across the world. Instructor Tim Pack brings music from 141 countries into his classroom through the World Music Ensemble, a “performance lab” where students analyze and play diverse instruments, and the World Music Series, which hosts international musicians at the UO.
The black-and-white silent films from the turn of the 20th century can seem far removed from today’s high-tech movies. In the Hands-On Film History course, you won’t simply watch and discuss old movies—you’ll use techniques and tools from early filmmaking to make your own.
The Science and Comic Initiative brings two groups together who are usually on opposite sides of campus: artists and scientists. Comics and cartoon studies minors partner with STEM students and faculty to draw comics that explain and simplify research—from how neurotransmitters work to unraveling the mystery of dark matter.
Competitive dancer Kara Cranston knows firsthand about the pain of pointe shoes and how often they’re replaced. She teamed up with students in her Sports Product Management program and former Nike designers to create a more durable and comfortable shoe that maintains the tradition of a centuries-old design.
