Educational Foundations isn't your typical education major. This teacher preparation program allows you to explore the social, cultural, and historical contexts of teaching before stepping into a classroom. Four years of educational theory and a year of teaching experience lead to a bachelor's degree and preparation for licensure and graduate programs.
Ellie Hein didn't travel to Costa Rica just to explore the tropical country. The family and human services major worked with Spanish-speaking adults with disabilities through the Education and Psychology in Costa Rica study abroad program, which combines coursework with an internship to provide real-world experience in social services.
Instead of relaxing, students in the Museum of Natural and Cultural History's outreach program spend the summer driving over 10,000 miles to rural communities across Oregon. At each town's public library, they present science talks and lead activities on topics from paleontology to space, bringing science education where it's needed.
Ichishkíin is an endangered Native American language of the Pacific Northwest. To help with revitalization, UO offers three years of Ichishkíin instruction, giving Native students a way to learn their tribal language. Through Ichishkíin classes, students study Native history and culture and learn a unique language that's unlike English.
At the Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health, students put their learning into practice. Working with youth to help navigate real-life challenges is part of the curriculum. By graduation, they're equipped with extensive field experience, professional skills, and the confidence to step into careers that strengthen children and families.
