Library Research Skills course: videorama edition

My UO colleagues Annie Zeidman-Karpinski and Karen Munro are co-teaching a special edition of Library 101 in Spring 2009. Check out the trailer (video linked above); more details below:
What do videos and video games have to do with library research? We’ll find out in this class, which will focus on teaching undergraduates how to do library research through the lens of visual culture and gaming. We’ll talk about how video games fit into our culture, how they’re discussed and written about, and we’ll play some games in class. We’ll also learn how to tell the difference between different kinds of discourse (scholarly articles vs. game reviews), discuss sticky issues like copyright and intellectual property, and learn how to track down the best sources for a research project or a walkthrough. The final project will be a collaborative video created by the students, featuring brief research reports, interviews, and reviews of resources. This class will be co-taught by Annie Zeidman-Karpinski in Eugene and Karen Munro in Portland, using a videoconference system. 04 feb 2009: note from Karen's blog:
"Thanks to Juanita for pointing me to Animoto as a quick video-creation tool. And thanks to the folks who licensed these images on Flickr Creative Commons (and whom I can’t credit in the video itself b/c of technical issues): brungrrl, Pop!Tech, RebeccaPollard, and Psycho Al. If you share, please pass on the credit."
