Introduction

The University of Oregon is dedicated to bringing energy efficiency and sustainability to our campus and supporting the surrounding community in these goals. It is in this respect that the WorkSmart Program was developed within the University's Environmental Leadership Program (ELP).    WorkSmart is a progressive program that combines University of Oregon students, faculty and the community to create awareness about energy consumption and energy efficiency.

WorkSmart is a partnership between the Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) and the Environmental Leadership Program. It uses tools from the Environmental Protection Agency's EnergyStar Program to benchmarks local business's energy consumption to other similar facilities nationwide. The goal of our work is to help reduce our local community's energy consumption and diminish local impact on the earth.    We would like to see cities around the nation work towards a similar goal of urban sustainability.

Businesses who choose to use our program will be given feed back on the energy efficiency of their building. From there they will be directed towards tools and programs which will either help them improve their energy conservation or help them stay on the leading edge of conservation. We hope that businesses will chose to take this route and use our and EWEB's resources. The greatest insentive to the business is to save money on their energy bill. But above and beyond that we are taking a step toward bringing the city of Eugene into the modern era of energy conservation.

Our mission is to help schools and businesses recognize where they stand in relation to others with energy usage and efficiency. We hope to encourage urban sustainability by giving schools and businesses in the community the power to make a difference in their energy consumption.
